Moving for work? Here’s how it works.
Your employer has asked Abode to help you find a home and settle in. Here’s what happens next, and what to have ready.
Your move, step by step
One person to call, the whole way.
- 01
A call with us
In your first two days with us we talk through what home means to you: the commute, budget, pets, parking, schools, must-haves and deal-breakers.
- 02
Your own home-search page
Homes we pick for you land on a private page with photos, floor plans and the map, updated as we find them. Tell us what you like and what you don’t, and the picks get sharper.
- 03
Tours, in person or by video
Still in your current city? We tour homes for you by live video, so you can choose without a trip. If you’re visiting, we plan the day around the places on your list.
- 04
Applying and signing
We negotiate the terms, help with the application and walk you through the lease or purchase paperwork before you sign anything.
- 05
Moving in
Utilities, internet, parking permits and the first-week essentials, with a local agent to call when something comes up.
- 06
A month in
We check in to ask how it’s going and fix what isn’t. Your HR team hears that it went well, not the details of your search.
What to have ready
So you can apply the day you find it.
Good homes go quickly. Having these to hand means you can apply the same day.
- A photo ID
- Your offer letter: many landlords accept it as proof of income for a new job, and we confirm which do before you apply
- Recent pay stubs or bank statements, if you have them
- A reference from a current or past landlord
- Vet records, if a pet is moving with you
- Your start date and the office address
Questions
What people ask us first.
Does working with Abode cost me anything?
Your employer’s relocation program covers the services they’ve agreed with us. Housing costs themselves, like rent, deposits and moving, follow your company’s relocation policy, so ask HR what it includes.
Can I choose a home before I move?
Yes. We tour homes by live video and many people sign before they arrive. We make sure you’ve seen everything that matters, including the street and the commute, before you decide.
I don’t know the city at all. Where do I start?
With the call. We’ll suggest neighborhoods that fit your commute, budget and way of life, and show you why. Our city guides are a good first read.
Can I bring my pet?
Usually. Buildings set their own pet rules, fees and breed or weight limits, so tell us early and we’ll only show you homes that work for your pet.
What if I’d rather buy?
Our agents help relocating employees buy as well as rent. Many rent first while they learn the city, and we can help with both.
Who will I be working with?
A licensed Abode agent who lives and works in the city you’re moving to, from the first call to the day-30 check-in.
