A 1920s Bank Building Turned Apartments in Uptown

This triangular building went up in the 1920s as a bank, from an era when Chicago's financial architecture doubled as civic statement. It still holds its corner at Broadway and Lawrence, blocks from the Riviera, Uptown Theatre, and Aragon Ballroom, and the ground-floor banking hall now houses a three-level co-working space instead of teller windows. The top eight floors were converted into 176 apartments, with stainless appliances and a rooftop deck added above the original stone. A fitness center and bike storage round out the amenities, and both cats and dogs are part of the mix. Few Uptown addresses carry this much architectural history into daily life, and the neighborhood's theaters and restaurants stay close at hand on foot.
